About the Position

Alta Construction East Inc. is an established commercial general contractor specializing in retail construction, commercial interiors, and tenant improvements throughout New York and New Jersey.

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated Construction Superintendent to take ownership of individual projects from mobilization through final completion.

Our projects are fast-paced, detail-oriented, and require strong coordination among multiple subcontractors. We are looking for a hands-on construction professional who understands the importance of planning ahead, maintaining quality, enforcing schedules, and communicating effectively.

This position offers substantial autonomy and direct access to experienced company leadership. We value individuals who take pride in their work, demonstrate initiative, and can independently identify and resolve construction challenges.

We are not looking for someone who simply observes subcontractors or reports problems. We are looking for someone who actively manages the construction process and takes responsibility for delivering successful projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for day-to-day field operations on assigned commercial construction projects from mobilization through closeout.

  • Thoroughly review and understand architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other relevant construction documents before and during construction.

  • Coordinate subcontractors, establish work sequences, and ensure adequate manpower is available to maintain project schedules.

  • Work with appropriate trades to establish and verify initial project layout, dimensions, elevations, and critical field conditions.

  • Identify drawing discrepancies, trade conflicts, and constructability concerns before they result in delays or rework.

  • Investigate field issues, evaluate potential solutions, and communicate recommendations promptly to project management.

  • Monitor project milestones, anticipate upcoming activities, and proactively address scheduling conflicts.

  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, quality control, site safety, housekeeping, and professional conduct.

  • Verify subcontractor work for compliance with project documents and applicable quality standards.

  • Coordinate required inspections, deliveries, site access, and building management requirements.

  • Maintain accurate daily reports documenting subcontractor attendance, manpower, work performed, project progress, and site conditions.

  • Document project progress with photographs and maintain organized field records.

  • Coordinate punch-list activities and ensure timely correction of deficiencies.

  • Communicate professionally with project managers, subcontractors, architects, building management, inspectors, and clients.

  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through until issues are resolved.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of commercial construction field experience , including substantial experience supervising commercial interior renovations, retail construction, or tenant improvement projects.

  • Demonstrated experience independently managing commercial construction projects as a superintendent.

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial construction methods, building systems, and subcontractor coordination.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and coordinate architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other construction documents.

  • Experience coordinating multiple trades and maintaining construction schedules in fast-paced environments.

  • Ability to identify construction discrepancies, troubleshoot field conditions, and communicate practical solutions.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of construction safety requirements, applicable building codes, and inspection procedures.

  • Ability to use digital construction drawings, email, daily reporting software, and standard computer applications.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to assigned project sites throughout New York and New Jersey.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with retail stores, shopping centers, department stores, restaurants, healthcare facilities, or occupied commercial renovations.

  • Experience working under compressed construction schedules and coordinating multiple trades simultaneously.

  • Familiarity with Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, Raken, and Microsoft Office.

  • Experience coordinating with mall management, building ownership, and operational facilities.

  • Demonstrated record of successfully completing projects on schedule while maintaining high workmanship standards.

The Qualities We Value

At Alta Construction, technical experience matters, but we believe successful superintendents distinguish themselves through their attitude, judgment, and commitment to their work.

We value professionals who:

  • Take ownership: Accept responsibility for their projects and follow through on commitments.

  • Show initiative: Anticipate problems and act before being instructed.

  • Pay attention to detail: Take pride in workmanship and address deficiencies rather than overlooking them.

  • Think critically: Review available information, investigate problems, and propose solutions before escalating issues.

  • Communicate effectively: Keep project management informed of progress, concerns, and upcoming decisions.

  • Hold subcontractors accountable: Establish clear expectations and follow up on manpower, scheduling, and quality commitments.

  • Demonstrate professionalism: Treat clients, coworkers, subcontractors, and building personnel with respect.

  • Remain adaptable: Respond constructively to the changing demands of commercial construction.

Applicants must have demonstrated experience supervising commercial general contracting projects. Experience limited primarily to residential construction, building maintenance, or individual trade supervision does not satisfy the requirements of this position.

Alta Construction East Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
